Mercury contained in hair of Seoul citizen (24 samples), Seoul suburban people (20 samples), dentist (10 samples), and farmer (7 samples) who engaged in sprinkling of organic mercuric agriculturals was determined by dithizone method.
Evaluation of the mercury contents in the healthy human hair has interested investigators for the purpose of estimating the inhalation of mercury vapours or the intake of organic mercury with foods. However, for the measurement of its content in the hair, it is necessary. to wash the hair in order to remove its surface contamination.
And that was washed to be got rid of surface contamination with a nonionic detergent and petroleum ether.
Especially it is necessary to care in obtaining hair, because mercury is very tightly bound to the hair and not easily removed by washing.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. The quantity of mercury in the hairs of Seoul citizens was showed 4.03¡¾1.70ppm. 2. That of Seoul suburban people was showed 3.20¡¾1.44ppm.
3. That of farmers was showed 5.40¡¾2.00ppm.
4. That of dentists was showed 6.28¡¾2.84ppm.
The difference of mercury contents in the hairs, therefore, may depend on residential environments and foods.
